Start Your Morning Like a Charlestonian

Forget rushing through a drive-thru.

Head to one of my favorites, Harbinger Cafe downtown for expertly roasted coffee, creative pastries and plant forward eats made with locally-sourced ingredients. If you’re exploring Mount Pleasant, Bloom & Bean is my fav! Bloom & Bean is a modern coffee shop with Scandanavian aesthetic offering specialty lattes, matcha, and seasonal food while offering fresh flowers bouquets as well. Grab a latte from Huriyali Gardens, tucked away on James Island, where locals linger over breakfast in a garden setting.

One thing you’ll notice quickly is that Charleston mornings move a little slower. People sit outside, walk their dogs, ride bikes, and actually take time to enjoy the start of the day.

Every Neighborhood Has Its Own Personality

One of the biggest misconceptions about moving to Charleston is that everyone wants to live downtown.

The truth? Most locals choose neighborhoods that fit the lifestyle they want.

Mount Pleasant

If you love being close to everything, Mount Pleasant offers excellent schools, waterfront parks, shopping, and easy access to both downtown Charleston and Sullivan’s Island.

Don’t miss an evening walk at Shem Creek Park, where you can watch dolphins swim through the marsh while shrimp boats return with the day’s catch.

Awendaw

Life in Awendaw offers a peaceful Lowcountry lifestyle where nature, privacy, and outdoor recreation take center stage.

Residents enjoy a slower pace of life with easy access to boating, fishing, hiking, and the natural beauty of the Francis Marion National Forest, all while remaining a short drive from the conveniences of Mount Pleasant and Charleston.

James Island

James Island has become one of my favorite recommendations for buyers who want a laid-back, established community just minutes from downtown and Folly Beach.

Spend an afternoon at James Island County Park, paddle the tidal creeks, or enjoy live music and great food at The Pour House, one of Charleston’s best local music venues or go see a movie at The Terrace Theater, an independent, locally owned movie theater with a vintage vibe offering concessions as well as beer and wine.

West Ashley

West Ashley offers a little bit of everything—historic neighborhoods, newer developments, shopping, and beautiful oak-lined roads.

Locals love walking or biking the West Ashley Greenway, a converted rail trail that stretches for more than eight miles through the heart of the community.

Johns Island

Johns Island feels like old Charleston.

You’ll find winding country roads, working farms, and some of the area’s best food. Visit The Angel Oak Tree, estimated to be 400–500 years old, then stop by Wild Olive for handmade pasta or The Royal Tern for fresh coastal cuisine.

It’s easy to see why so many buyers looking for a little more space fall in love with Johns Island.

Eat Where the Locals Actually Go

Charleston has earned national recognition for its food scene, but some of the best meals aren’t necessarily the ones with months-long reservations.

Here are a few local favorites:

• Spice Pallette in Mount Pleasant for contemporary Indian dining
• Basil in Mount Pleasant for Thai dishes in a stylish small-chain outpost
• Five Loaves in Mount Pleasant for soup, salad and gourmet sandwiches + entrees using quality ingredients
• Millers All Day on James Island for a delicious and hearty breakfast or brunch
• The Harlow on James Island for delicious burgers, fresh oysters and creative cocktails
• Bowens Island Restaurant for an authentic Lowcountry seafood experience overlooking the marsh
• Jack of Cups Saloon on Folly Beach when you’re looking for something a little unexpected.
• Wild Olive on Johns Island is a popular Italian restaurant known for its homemade pasta
• The Royal Tern on Johns Island for fine dining with excellent service with seafood centric entrees

Of course, everyone develops their own favorites over time—and that’s part of the fun.

Beach Days Depend on Your Mood

One of the biggest perks of living here is choosing your beach.

Sullivan’s Island tends to be quieter and more residential, making it perfect for long walks and relaxed afternoons.

Isle of Palms offers a classic family beach experience with plenty of space to spread out.

Folly Beach has a fun, eclectic vibe that’s popular with surfers, live music lovers, and anyone who appreciates a casual afternoon by the ocean.

Locals usually have a favorite—and they’ll gladly tell you why it’s the best.

Get Outside

Charleston is built around the water, and you don’t have to own a boat to enjoy it.

Rent a kayak and explore Shem Creek, paddle through the marshes around James Island, take a sunset cruise in the harbor, or spend a Saturday fishing from one of the public piers.

Even if you’re not particularly outdoorsy, it’s hard not to appreciate watching dolphins surface while you’re out on the water.

Shop Local

Charleston’s small businesses are part of what gives the city its character.

Spend a Saturday morning at the Charleston Farmers Market in Marion Square, browse local shops along King Street, or visit neighborhood markets throughout neighboring communities.

Supporting local businesses isn’t just something people talk about here—it’s woven into everyday life.
